One of the major problems in the treatment of dogs with chronic kidney disease and reduced kidney function is maintaining an optimal nutrition state. A study conducted at Iowa State University (VJ Parker and LM Freeman, Association between Body Condition and Survival in Dogs with Acquired Chronic Kidney Disease, J Vet Intern Med 2011) evidenced that dogs in renal failure (IRIS stages 2, 3 and 4) that have a better state of nutrition or even overweighted at diagnosis, have an average survival time higher than patients with poor nutrition.
