URINE DIPSTICK AS SCREENING TEST FOR PROTEINURIA IN DOGS

The urinalysis is probably the most useful test you can choose if you want to early diagnose kidney disease in dogs in an area, such as the Mediterranean, where many vector-borne infectious diseases (such as leishmaniasis) can cause kidney damage. In almost all patients affected by this kind of disease, the renal damage initially presents with proteinuria and, if an antiproteinuric treatment is not set, the disease progresses to renal failure. It is then clear the importance of screening tests in the whole canine population considered at risk (e.g. dogs living or which have stayed in areas where infectious disease is present and positive to antibodies research). An Italian study (Zatelli A, et al. Evaluation of a urine dipstick test for confirmation or exclusion of proteinuria in dogs. Am J Vet Res 2010) revealed how the dipstick test in urine can be used as screening test for proteinuria in canines and a negative result will exclude proteinuria. On the contrary, a positive result will require additional exams in order to decide whether the patient requires treatment or monitoring
